‘77 Blackout’ By Cary Joji Fukunaga.
Cary Fukunaga is back, the ‘No Time To Die’ director is set to direct a crime thriller titled “77 Blackout”. two time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali (Green Book) is starring alongside Tom Hardy (Dark Night Rises, Venom). The script was written by Frank Hughes with revisions made by Fukunaga. Charles Roven (Oppenheimer) is producing the pic.
Black Bear introduced the film to international buyers at the Cannes market. Mahershala Ali and Tom Hardy were confirmed to star in the movie, with more casting yet to be announced. Ali will play Ray Butler and Hardy will play Eddie Boyle.
Ali, whose Oscars came from ‘Moonlight’ and ‘Green Book’, most recently starred in Netflix’s ‘Leave The World Behind’. He also has the ‘Blade’ reboot in the works, which could be one of the most troubled productions in recent movie history. The movie which was announced five years ago at San Diego’s ComicCon, has involved three directors exiting the project with over six screenwriters trying to come up with a suitable script. Ali and Mia Goth are still confirmed to be in the movie, but some sources say Ali’s patience is running out.
Tom Hardy’s past credits include ‘Inception’, ‘The Revenant’, ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ and the Venom franchise. He will be next seen in the third Venom film (Venom: The Last Dance) which is releasing on October 25, 2024. In September, Hardy was confirmed to be starring in another Cary Joji Fukunaga film titled “Blood on Snow” with Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Hardy will have a supporting role.
Synopsis: In 1977, New York City was plunged into darkness after not one but three lightning strikes hit substations and transmission lines, Violence, looting and vandalism was rampant for approximately eight hours. amidst the chaos, five rogue police officers formulate a plan to rob three criminal strongholds — the Hong Kong Triads, the Italian Mafia, and the Harlem Mob - all in one night. when the blackout sweeps the night of the robbery, the crew is forced to navigate a hellish landscape as years of being overworked and underpaid forces each of them to confront their own mortality.
Cary Fukunaga broke out with his high-wire directing in the acclaimed first season of ‘True Detective’. He also helmed the much-lauded “Beasts of No Nation”, a popular Netflix series - “Maniac” starring Jonah Hill and Emma Stone. he also directed Daniel Craig’s last Bond film “No Time To Die” in 2021, which made $775 million globally, and was Cary’s last feature movie. He then directed multiple episodes of the big-budget Apple series “Masters Of Air”.
It’s been almost three years since allegations came out against Fukunaga. This will be a good test to see if Fukunaga can get this one actually made. in 2021, he was accused of pressuring an actress into doing a topless scene for “True Detective” that wasn’t included in her contracted role as a stripper. this opened to more allegations brought against him.
Months later, In April and May 2022, three women accused Fukunaga of “pursuing relationships with them” on the set of “Masters of Air”, which he denied. This was all happening as Fukunaga was releasing “No Time to Die”. so to finally confirming two upcoming movies after 2 years shows signs of producers putting confidence in him again to deliver hopefully good films. He quickly became one of my favorite director after watching ‘Maniac’.
“77 Blackout” was a hot Cannes package introduced by Black Bear. with WME repping U.S rights. The film is in production with no distribution partner yet.
