‘Broadsword’ By Christopher McQuarrie.
After collaborating on four “Mission Impossible” films, Tom Cruise is reportedly starring in a new WWII project directed by Christopher McQuarrie titled — “Broadsword”. The war thriller is set to shoot in summer 2025, and produced by Warner Bros. McQuarrie and Erik Jendresen will write the script.
Joining Tom Cruise (Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut) is his “Mission Impossible: Fallout” castmate Henry Cavill (The Man From UNCLE). Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard (Inception) has been set as the female lead.
Synopsis: The story of an S.O.E. (Special Operation Executive) mission in WWII follows a Royal Marine Captain who crashes in France and becomes the sole survivor. Against all odds, he must complete his mission amidst the chaos of war.
Tom Cruise is reportedly shooting Alejandro Inarritu’s untitled film as his next movie in the U.K next month.
“Broadsword” will be produced by Warner Bros. as part of their massive recent deal with Cruise, who will star in and produce new original and IP projects with the studio. The film will also be Cruise’s return to WWII after 2008’s “Valkyrie”. McQuarrie and Cruise will also produce the new film.
McQ and Erik Jendresen are writing the screenplay. They wrote the last ‘Mission’ film “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning”. McQ recently told Empire (via Collider) that after work is completed on the eighth Mission film, he and Cruise will move on to their next project, which has been dubbed “The Gnarly Movie’ by fans.
“There’s a movie that Cruise and I are talking about doing next or in some probable next, that Erik and I developed together — what has been referred to on the internet as “The Gnarly Movie”. It’s that movie that they’re all asking for, and that we want to do.”
Tom Cruise will be very busy in the next couple of years. Cruise is starting production on Alejandro Inarritu’s next film in U.K as early as next month. Then, he has “Top Gun 3” — (sequel to ‘Maverick’) planned, which will be directed by Joseph Kosinski, with Cruise returning. “Top Gun 3” could start after Cruise finishes McQ’s “Broadsword”.
Tom also has an untitled film with Doug Liman, his director on “Edge of Tomorrow”, that will make him the first civilian to do a space walk outside the ISS.
McQuarrie, who won the Oscar for “The Usual Suspects”, made his directorial debut with 2000’s “The Way of the Gun”. Ever since then, he’s become Cruise’s most frequent collaborator, having written and directed action films “Jack Reacher” and four ‘Mission’ films — “Rogue Nation”, “Fallout”, “Dead Reckoning” and the potential final franchise film - “Mission Impossible: 8”. He was also a part of the writing and/or producing team on Cruise films “Valkyrie”, “Edge of Tomorrow”, “The Mummy” and “Top Gun Maverick”.
More announcements about the cast and production will be made in the coming months.
