‘Day Drinker’ By Marc Webb.
“Day Drinker”, a supernatural thriller from director Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man) was announced in 2022, but there aren’t many updates regarding this film, until now. It was heavily reported in the last couple of years, that Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean) was involved in the project as the lead. Zach Dean (The Tomorrow War) wrote the original script and will also produce. 30West is financing and will executive-produce.
In March 2024, insider Jeff Sneider reported that Johnny Depp and Sydney Sweeney were set to star in Webb’s “Day Drinker”. He said he had read the first 25 pages of the script and liked what he saw — “It’s the perfect indie for Sweeney to star in”. It didn’t take long for Sweeney’s team to deny the reports, including the actress herself tweeting about the rumor: @sydney_sweeney — woke up to rumors, anyway go see @Immaculatemovie in theatres this weekend
Premise: Day Drinker is said to be about the bond between an enigmatic stranger and a bartender — mourning the loss of her lover. It will explore themes of love, friendship and revenge, set in the beautiful coastal regions of France, Portugal and Spain.
Deadline stated that the project could become a hot Cannes prospect but that hasn’t been set up yet.
The main pushback has occurred because of Johnny Depp. given the toxic figure he is in certain corners of the internet, backlash occurred from Sweeney fans when there were reports of her teaming up with Depp. that’s why her team had to immediately deny the reports.
In September, a new update about the film surfaced. There were reports that Daisy Edgar-Jones (Twisters) is in talks to star in Webb’s “Day Drinker” alongside Johnny Depp.
The news was reported by “insider” @MyTimeToShineH on X: “Daisy Edgar-Jones is in talks for the female lead in ‘Day Drinker’ alongside Johnny Depp. Sydney Sweeny was previously rumored for the role, but it seems she is no longer involved”.
Many people are excited to see Depp leading a Hollywood movie after years. Depp was quickly deemed persona non grata in Hollywood, because of his former wife Amber Heard’s domestic violence accusations. He had to go to court to get his good name back, but, even after his victory, he’s still not very welcomed in many industry circles.
People like Time Burton, Helena Bonham Carter, Al Pacino and Terry Gilliam are on Depp’s side and have stated that he should come back to act in major films again.
Another reason for the film’s delay could be because director Marc Webb is busy with Disney’s “Snow White” remake starring Rachel Zeglar and Gal Gadot. which has finished production and will start promotions tour.
Webb began his career as a music video director and made his feature film debut with hit rom-com (500 Days of Summer), starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel. He went on to direct “The Amazing Spider-Man” and it’s sequel “The Amazing Spider-Man 2’, each of which grossed more than $700 million.
“Day Drinker” is expected to have an official announcement soon regarding the producers, and the rest of the cast memebers.
The film is expected to begin filming by early 2025.
