Jim Jarmusch’s first film in five years titled - “Father Mother Sister Brother” has just wrapped filming. The comedy drama anthology film will be written and directed by Jarmusch. Cate Blanchett, Adam Driver and Vicky Krieps star in the film. Match Factory handled international sales at Cannes this year. Saint Laurent Productions, MUBI and The Apartment Pictures are producing the film.

Jim Jarmusch has booked a starry cast to join his anticipated film. In December 2023, it was reported that Cate Blanchett (Tar, Thor: Ragnarok) was cast in the film. In January 2024, Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread, Old) joined the cast. In May 2024, Adam Driver (Megalopolis, Ferrari), Mayim Bialik (Big Bang Theory), Tom Waits (Licorice Pizza), Charlotte Rampling (Dune, Benedetta), Indya Moore and Luka Sabbat were announced to be part of the cast.

Film description: “Father Mother Sister brother” is described as “a feature film in the form of triptych”. Three separate stories all concern the relationships between adult children, their somewhat distant parent (or parents), and each other. Each of the three parts take place in the present, and each in a different country. ‘Father’ is set in the Northeast U.S, ‘Mother’ in Dublin, Ireland and ‘Sister Brother’ in Paris, France. The film is a series of character studies, quiet, observational and non-judgmental. A comedy, but interwoven with threads of melancholy.

Speaking at the Overlook Film Festival in April 2023, Jarmusch sat down for a conversation concerning the tenth anniversary of his great “Only Lovers Left Alive”. During that discussion, Jarmusch said he was working on a new film that was a “very subtle film; it’s very quiet…funny and sad”. He hinted that the film may not have any music.

Jarmusch planned to start shooting in late 2023, then the strikes happened and the film was delayed. Principal photography began in November 2023 in West Milford, New Jersey. Filming took place in Dublin in early 2024, and wrapped in Paris in May 2024.

Paparazzi photos from the set made the rounds in January, showing Blanchett filming an outdoor scene with Vicky Krieps (in a pink wig). During Cannes Film Festival, The Match Factory confirmed that it had boarded the project and will handle international sales during the festival, while Jarmusch completes post-production back in New York.

The film is expected to be finished later this year. The film is produced and presented by Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello (yes, the fashion house), MUBI and The Apartment. In Ireland, financing was provided by Fis Eireann and Screen Ireland. Cinema Inutile delivered equity finance. lenders were Cofiloisirs and Three Point Capital.

Presales have already been negotiated with Weltkino in Germany and Les Films du Losanges in France. Gersh will handle North American rights.

Vaccarello and Saint Laurent are becoming something of a force in the indie film space following the launch of Sint Laurent Productions. which had three film in the 2024 Cannes Film Festival competition, including “The Shrouds”, “Parthenope” and “Emilia Perez”.

The movie reteams Jarmusch with Adam Driver, whom he directed in “Paterson” and “The Dead don’t Die”. Blanchett also worked with Jarmusch in “Coffee & Cigarettes”.

The Ohio-born filmmaker has been a mainstay of the indie movie scene since the 80’s. His minimalist, unhurried and idiosyncratic films don’t follow transitional narrative structures, but rather tend to focus more on mood.

Meanwhile, Blanchett is keeping herself very busy. She recently starred in Guy Maddin’s “Rumors”, and has the much anticipated Alfonso Cuaron’s Apple TV series “Disclaimers” coming later this year.

The key crew includes cinematographers Frederick Elmes and Yorick Le Saux. Elmes is a veteran DOP, and was a long time collaborator of directors such as David Lynch, Ang Lee and Charlie Kaufman. his past credits include “Blue Velvet”, “Eraserhead” and “Synecdoche New York”. Elmes and Jarmusch have previously worked on “Paterson” and “The Dead don’t Die”.
