‘In The Grey’ By Guy Ritchie.
Guy Ritchie is a non-stop movie making machine. Last year out of Cannes, he announced an untitled action film starring Henry Cavill (Superman) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler). In April, at the Lionsgate panel at CinemaCon, we finally learned that the film will be released in January 2025, and has the title “In The Grey”. It will be written and directed by Ritchie. Black Bear Pictures will produce the pic while Lionsgate will distribute.
The cast for ‘In The Grey’ is filled with Ritchie’s past collaborators including, Cavill and Gyllenhaal. Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) was also announced to have joined the cast earlier in the year. there’s also Eiza Gonzalez, who will also star in another Ritchie film with Natalie Portman and John Krasinski (Fountain Of Youth), marking her third straight collaboration with the action-comedy veteran. In October 2023, Carlos Bardem and Fisher Stevens were revealed to be part of the cast as well.
Synopsis: It follows a group who operates in the middle of criminality and the law, with Cavill and Gyllenhaal joining forces in the search for billions of dollars of stolen cash, while planning an escape path for a high-level female negotiator (Gonzalez).
Cavill and Ritchie also showed a snippet at the CinemaCon, which showed Gyllenhaal and Gonzalez staking out a cafe while Cavill talks to them through an earpiece, classically all hell breaks loose next when the cafe erupts in a shootout and the pair have to fight back and escape. It’s then made clear that the trio are on a mission to steal back some money that was taken by a gang of criminals. There are bad guys, glamorous locations and Gyllenhaal firing a rocket launcher — what more could you want from a Guy Ritchie film.
In May 2023, Black Bear International were handling international sales for the Guy Ritchie action pic as it was brought to the Cannes Film Market. The production was granted an interim agreement allowing the actors to work on the film during the 2023 strikes.
Filming began in September 2023 on Tenerife in the Canary Islands and ender in late October 2023. Early production took place in the Real Casino de Tenerife in Plaza de la Candelaria, before moving to San Andres, Santa Cruz de Tenerife to film at the fishing dock and Las Teresitas beach areas, with some chase scenes through the village.
Of working with Gyllenhaal, The ‘Superman’ actor said: “Jake is not only an incredible talent but what a wonderful man. I’m hoping we may see both of us on screen more often.”
Like I said, this Guy doesn’t relax. Yet another Guy Ritchie movie was greenlit, titled - ‘Wife And Dog’, another project Black Bear is launching at the Cannes market. It is said to deal with class and will be in similar vein to his hit Netflix series “The Gentlemen”. There’s also the second season of “The Gentlemen” he’ll be working on. Plus, Ritchie has a ‘Young Sherlock’ series in the works at Prime Video. and there’s the Natalie Portman and John Krasinski starrer “Fountain of Youth” which is in production.
Ritchie is quickly turning into the most prolific filmmaker in Hollywood, the man is giving Ridley Scott a run for his money. He has directed five projects in the last four years, and has already completed another one (In The Grey), which is in post-production.
Ed Wild will be the cinematographer for the film. His past credits include Ritchie’s “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” and “The Covenant”.
In October 2023, Lionsgate acquired U.S. distribution rights to the film. and will release on January 17, 2025.
