‘Mother Mary’ By David Lowery.
In March 2023, Deadline confirmed that A24 is reuniting with it’s “Green Knight” director David Lowery on his next film ‘Mother Mary’. It stars Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel. Lowery also wrote the script. Topic Studios is co-financing with A24. this marks Lowery and A24’s third collaboration after his acclaimed ‘The Green Knight’ and ‘A Ghost Story’. A24 will also release the pic worldwide.
The film is described as an epic pop melodrama following a fictional musician (Hathaway) and her relationship with an iconic fashion designer (Coel).
In May 2023, Hunter Schafer (Euphoria) was added to the cast and will play Hilda, assistant to Coel’s designer character, Sam. In May 2024, FKA Twigs, Jessica Brown, Sian Clifford, along with some popular fashion models— Kai Gerber and Alba Baptista also joined the cast.
The project was first announced in March 2023, and filming began in Germany (North Rhineland Westphalia), despite starting production in May 2023, there were no updates or reports of completing the shoot, until July 2024!, when Anne Hathaway finally announced that the film had wrapped. There were no issues with the SAG-AFTRA strike either, as the production was granted a waiver to continue filming. So lot of people were wondering what was taking so long. there were some trades reporting that when asked, A24 told them that production had been broken up throughout these last 14 months due to Lowery’s need to film “specific scenes and venues”.
The cast and crew lineup are suggesting this will be another success for Lowery, with the scoundtrack offering some of the real industry’s big names. Both Charlie XCX and Jack Antnonoff have been recruited to write songs for Hathaway’s character.
Lowery is very savvy at juggling his arthouse passion projects like “A Ghost Story”, “The Green Knight”, “Ain’t Them Bodies A Saint” with high-priced Disney movies like “Pete’s Dragon and “Pan and Wendy”. We don’t know much about Mother Mary but there are expectaions of a release date buzzing around late 2024 or early 2025 mark.
Lowery is collaborating with Andrew Droz Palermo as his cinematographer, he also lensed Lowery’s “A Ghost Story” and “The Green Knight”— which received critical acclaim for it’s stunning visuals.
