‘RIP’ By Joe Carnahan.
In June 2024, It was reported that an exciting package hit the market which would reunite Matt Damon and Ben Affleck on a crime thriller “RIP”, directed by Joe Carnahan. Netflix acquired the package in July. Carnahan also penned the script. Damon and Affleck’s Artists Equity is producing the film. They were both last seen in Amazon MGM’s “AIR”.
Joining Oscar winners Ben Affleck (Gone Girl) and Matt Damon (The Martian) are Teyana Taylor and Sasha Calle (The Flash), who were announced in October. Later that month, Kyle Chandler (Zero Dark Thirty), Catalina Moreno (Silent Night) and Nestor Carbonell (Bates Motel) also joined the cast.
Premise: The film follows a group of Miami cops whose trust begins to fray after they discover millions in cash in a derelict stash house. Things are complicated by police rules requiring them to stay on location. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question — including who they can rely on.
Michael Joe and Kevin Halloran of Artists Equity will executive produce the pic. After launching Artists Equity in 2022, Damon and Affleck released the company’s first film, ‘AIR’, in 2023, to strong reviews and a solid box office performance. since then, it has produced Apple’s “The Instigators” starring Damon, while the Amazon MGM pic “Unstoppable” is gearing for a December premiere after its debut at TIFF.
As for ‘RIP’, the package came together pretty quickly in recent weeks. Affleck and Damon were looking for a new project under the banner as Affleck was finishing production on his sequel to “The Accountant”. Ironically, the two tried to do another crime thriller, “Animals”, at the top of the year at Netflix, but scheduling with ‘The Accountant 2” couldn’t be worked out and that was put on pause.
Deadline reported that, Damon was first to read the ‘RIP’ script and was blown away, and quickly got into the hands of Affleck. Once both Oscar winners were on board, the package hit the market.
The film begins production later this month in Miami and Los Angeles.
No stranger to crime thrillers, Joe Carnahan had his indie debut with 2002s “Narc”, which starred Ray Liotta and Jason Patric, which is one of his best films. His other credits include; “The Grey”, starring Liam Neeson, “Copshop” and “Smokin’ Aces” which also starred Affleck. Carnahan loves to make pulpy action movies and has built a decent following over the years.
Netflix would most probably release the film in 2025.
