Denzel Washington: “Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next Black Panther”.
During a recent interview while promoting “Gladiator II” with Today Show Australia, Denzel Washington laid out how he approaches projects depending on the filmmakers and also discussed about a potential retirement from acting. During the interview, Washington also stated he might be entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
When host Richard Wilkins asked “this is of course a sequel to a film that has won a few Oscars [“Gladiator”], was there any trepidation or pressure?” Denzel replied;
“No… no, for me it’s about the filmmaker, especially at this point in my career. I’m only interested in working with the best, I don’t know how many films I’m gonna make.. probably not that many. I wanna do things I haven’t done. I played Othello at 22, I’m about to play Othello at 70... after that I’m playing Hannibal, after that I’ve been talking with Steve McQueen about a film, after that Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next Black Panther, after that I’m gonna do the film Othello, after that I’m gonna do King Lear, after that I’m gonna retire.”
Black Panther 3 is currently in development, featuring Letitia Wright as the lead, succeeding the late Chadwick Boseman. Rumors about the plot include; The Midnight Angels expecting to tie into the storyline, with a significant focus on Vibranium, a valuable resource sparking tensions leading to a conflict between the US and Wakanda.
Denzel Washington recently wrapped production on Spike Lee’s “Highest 2 Lowest”. a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s “High & Low”, but Spike Lee, who is in post-production on the film reiterates that the film is a “reinterpretation” and not a remake. The film is being helmed by Apple Studios and A24.
