Viggo Mortensen asked to return for “The Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum”.

Couple of months earlier, Andy Serkis and Warner Bros. made a major announcement regarding the “LOTR” franchise. Andy Serkis is set to star and direct “Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum”, a movie focused on Gollum set before the first film. It was getting quite the buzz as the film could potentially reunite the original cast. Ian McKellen and Orlando Bloom have stated that they have been asked to return in their respective roles.

In a recent interview with The Playlist, “Lord Of The Rings” writer Philippa Boyens (who is also scripting “Hunt For Gollum) talks about how the new film features a prominent role for Aragorn, and they hope to have Mortensen return.

‘The Hunt For Gollum’ is apparently set during the “Fellowship of the Ring” era, shortly before Frodo Baggins leaves the Shire for Rivendell. The films starts with Gandalf sending Aragorn on a quest to find Gollum.

When asked about if Mortensen will return, Boyens replied; “Honestly, that’s entirely going to be up to Viggo, collaboratively and we are at a very early stage” she added, “I’ve spoken to him, Peter [Jackson] has spoken to him, Andy [Serkis] has spoken to him, we’ve all spoken to each other and honestly, I cannot imagine anyone else playing Aragorn, but it will be completely and entirely be up to Viggo”.

Andy Serkis had stated that if any original actors decide to return for the film, he will solve the aging problem with digital de-aging, like they did on “The Irishman”. It could be a controversial decision.

Boyens added that if Mortensen is not game to return, then he’d have to “hand off” the character to another actor.
