‘Marty Supreme’ By Josh Safdie.
“Marty Supreme” will be Josh Safdie’s first feature he directed without his brother Benny, since 2008. It’s a sports drama film, which was partly inspired by professional Table Tennis player Marty Reisman. Timothee Chalamet will play the titular role. The film is written by Josh and Ronald Bronstein. A24 will distribute the film and also produce. Bronstein will serve as editor and also produce the film alongside Eli Bush and Chalamet.
The cast for the film is — as trades called it “getting weirder by the day”, joining Timothee Chalamet (Dune), is Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow (Seven). after a few years away from the big screen, Paltrow is back in her first substantial role since 2019s “Avengers: Endgame”. In September, Grammy winner Tyler, The Creator was added to the cast. Later, Odessa A’zion (Hellraiser), magician Penn Jillette (Penn & Teller), investor and “Shark Tank” personality Kevin O’Leary, Abel Farrara, SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher and Sandra Bernhand (The King of Comedy) joined the cast.
Synopsis: Set in the 1950s, the pic has been reported as being loosely inspired by pro table tennis player Marty Reisman. At the same time, sources close to the production stress that it’s a fictionalized original, rather than a biopic. although, Reisman’s 1974 autobiography will be used as a template. Reisman, who died in 2012, was a table tennis champion with more than 20 international and national titles, who started his career as a hustler in Manhattan. At 67, he competed in the United States National Hardbat Championship and became the oldest player to win an open national competition in a racket sport.
For Safdie, he comes to the project following the revelation not too long ago that he and his brother Benny have split off to pursue solo directing careers, while continuing to produce together through their Elara Pictures. The Safdie brothers have a good relationship with A24, who produced and/or distributed their films such as, “Uncut Gems” and “Good Time”. Josh recently helmed Adam Sandler’s latest comedy special for Netflix titled “I Love You”, and he’s also working with Sandler on a separate movie set in the world of sports memorabilia and baseball.
His brother, Benny Safdie, also recently wrapped production on his own A24 sports biopic: “The Smashing Machine”, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. both brothers’ films are due out next year. Benny recently worked on Showtime and A24 black comedy series “The Curse”, which he created and wrote with Nathan Fielder. “The Curse” is one of the most diabolical and eerie tv shows that should be seen to be believed.
Principal photography began in New York City, in September 2024.
Oscar nominated and veteran cinematographer, Darius Khondji was chosen to lens the film. He has worked with David Fincher, Woody Allen and James Gray in the past. He also was the DP on Safdie brothers classic “Uncut Gems”
