Simon Kinberg set to write & produce new Star Wars trilogy.

Lucasfilm has closed a deal with Simon Kinberg to develop a trilogy of Star Wars films. Kinberg will write the films and produce them with Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy.

Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr is reporting that the new films would comprise of Episodes 10-12 of the Skywalker saga that began with George Lucas’ 1977 first film. Fleming also stated that many insiders dispute this intel, that Kinberg will continue the storyline, saying that instead he will begin a new saga. “The Rise of Skywalker” released in 2019 was Episode 9, so Fleming is saying that Kinberg might continue the Daisy Ridley led ‘Rey Skywalker’ saga.

While elsewhere, The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit is disputing the intel that Kinberg’s trilogy will be Episodes 10-12. Kit’s sources tell him that it’s not a continuation of the Skywalker saga but rather a new story focused on new characters, a “new path forward”. Kit writes that “ the intent here is to have brand new characters and a new story, and not have it be a continuation.” (although that does not mean that some characters could not or would not pop up).

Kinberg previously worked with Lucasfilm in co-creating the Emmy nominated series “Star Wars Rebels” with Dave Filoni and Carrie Beck. He was also a consultant on Star Wars EP VII: “The Force Awakens”, the J.J. Abrams-directed film that revived the franchise in 2015.

His non Star Wars writing and producer credits include a decade spent on “X-Men” films, including Wolverine spinoff “Logan” directed by James Mangold. He also produced the first two “Deadpool” films and “The Martian” directed by Ridley Scott. He is about to go into production on Edgar Wright’s “Running Man” remake starring Glen Powell.

Simon Kinberg is one of the busiest creative in Hollywood right now, and he’s also helping develop the rival “Star Trek” franchise for Paramount, with a deal he made in May. He is said to maintain those duties, more like keeping one hand on a Lightsaber and the other on a Phaser.

Then again, we can’t ignore the Kinberg flops and mediocrity projects; “Fantastic Four”, “X-Men: Apocalypse”, “Dark Phoenix” and “The New Mutants”.

Up next in Star Wars universe is Jon Favreau’s “Mandalorian & Grogu” film. Not including Kinberg’s trilogy, there are seven other ‘Star Wars’ projects currently in development, from directors James Mangold, Obaid-Chimoy, Dave Filoni, Donald Glover, Shawn Levy and Patty Jenkins.
