Warner Bros. developing a ‘Game Of Thrones Movie’.
The Hollywood Reporter broke out a story that Warner Bros. are looking to develop a “Game Of Thrones” film. “a movie extending the ‘Game of Thrones’ franchise based on the hugely popular fantasy books by George R.R. Martin, is in very early development at Warner Bros. No filmmaker, cast or writer has been attached, but the company is exploring the idea of Westeros invading cinemas.”
Deadline stated that Warner Bros. declined to comment. “from what we hear, there have only been preliminary discussions on the subject of a GOT movie for now, so there are no creative direction a film would take in comparison to the HBO series, which adopted Martin’s “A Song of Ice & Fire” book series.”
There are no confirmed reports or rumors that the potential new film would be a prequel or a sequel. News of the potential project comes five years following the conclusion of the David Benioff and D.B. Weiss-created Game of Thrones, which brought in one of the biggest viewership and ample accolades for the premium TV studio, including 59 Emmys.
Despite the hugely controversial and divisive final season, the show’s success has led to spin-offs, including the prequel series “House of the Dragon”, from creators Ryan Condal & George R.R. Martin. The next GOT-related series coming to screens is “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” - another prequel based on Martin’s “Tales of Dunk & Egg” novellas, which is expected to premiere sometime next year.
The original series’ showrunners famously wanted to conclude the series with 3 feature films instead of it’s 2019 final season. Martin was also keen on the idea but for a long time, HBO strongly resisted the idea and wanted to preserve the prestige series as an HBO property.
Since then, there has been a change in the Film versus TV landscape, including an increased willingness to shift cinematic properties to small screen and back again, especially at HBO. There have been Matt Reeves’ box-office hit “The Batman” launching it’s acclaimed HBO spinoff “The Penguin”, Max’s upcoming “Dune: Prophecy” TV series following the success of Denis Villeneuve’s two films, HBO prepping a new take on JK. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” novels as a TV series, and Warner Bros. developing new “Lord of the Rings” movies even as Amazon unfurls it’s “The Rings of Power” series.
