Justin Kurzel wants to make a ‘Mad Max’ prequel.

In a recent interview with Collider, Justin Kurzel (“Nitram”, “The Order”) stated that he has a good idea for a prequel to George Miller’s “Mad Max” franchise. He says he wants to do an installment set in the early days of the fall of civilization, before we encounter Mel Gibson’s Max Rockatansky. He is now seeking his fellow Australian filmmaker George Miller to pitch his project.

“I’ve always been curios about what happened before the first ‘Mad Max’ — what was the world before the Nightrider, pre-Mad Max? I’ve always been very curious that and very tempted to talk to George about the possibility of a world that is pre-Mad Max 1 and what that is. That’s been one that I’ve always been really curious about because it was such an influential film in my time. It’s an amazing franchise, but I’ve always been curious about those moments before that first one because it’s set up so richly. And it’s such a great time in Australia, too. that period.”

George Miller had his own plans for a prequel movie titled — “Mad Max: The Wasteland” which has Tom Hardy’s Max in the events leading up to ‘Fury Road’. But considering “Furiosa’s” undeserving box-office disappointment, I don’t think studios want to engage on another expensive ‘Mad Max’ project, for now.

Miller has directed all five of the films to date from 1979’s “Mad Max” through to “Furiosa”. He also holds the rights to his franchise, so at least no studio can do a lame cash-grab project without him.
