‘Tony’ By Matt Johnson.

Following the critically acclaimed film “BlackBerry”, director Matt Johnson has set his next project. A Anthony Bourdain biopic titled “Tony”, from Star Thrower Entertainment. Dominic Sessa (The Holdovers) is attached to star as the late chef. Lou Howe and Todd Bartels penned the script. Deadline reported that A24 is in negotiations to acquire the package. Matt Miller and Johnson will produce and Emily Rose will executive produce the film.

As of this date, only Sessa is attached to the movie. Following his breakout role in the Oscar-winning dramedy “The Holdovers”, Dominic Sessa is a hot property in Hollywood right now, as many studios and directors want to work with the young talent. He is set to appear next in “Now You See Me 3”.

Anthony Bourdain came up cooking in various restaurants across Manhattan in the 1980s and 90s. It was his essay collection about the ugly secrets of restaurants that put him on the map. Following their publication in The New Yorker, Bourdain became an instant star on the media food scene due to his point-blank, tell-it-like-it-is tone that audience were not accustomed to.

He would begin hosting a number of TV shows, but it was his Travel Channel series “Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations” that made him star over it’s eight-season run. Bourdain died by suicide in 2018.

It is unknown at what point in his life this project will take place.

Star Thrower is an Oscar-nominated production company, and is no stranger to the biopic scene. They produced “The Post” and “King Richard”— which earned a Best Picture Oscar nomination and a Lead Actor win for Will Smith.

Matt Johnson co-wrote and directed last years acclaimed dark comedy “BlackBerry” — which was about the rise and the fall of the smartphone company. he is a seriously talented director, writer and actor. Him and Sessa attached to the project is a good sign.
